چکیده

The origin of the spiral pattern of magnetic fields in disc galaxies is an open question. Comparison of the regular magnetic field orientation with the gaseous spiral arm pitch angles can tell us whether spiral shock compression is responsible for the magnetic spirals. We also wish to see whether the ridges of different components of the ISM show the large-scale, systematic shifts expected from density wave theory. We have developed a technique of isolating elongated structures in galactic images, such as spiral arms, using anisotropic wavelets and apply this to maps of the CO, infrared and radio continuum emission of the grand-design spiral galaxy M51. Systematic shifts between the ridges of CO, infrared and radio continuum emission that are several kpc long are identified, as well as large variations in pitch angle along spiral arms, of a few tens of degrees. We find two types of arms of polarized radio emission: one has a ridge close to the ridge of CO, with similar pitch angles for the CO and polarization spirals and the regular magnetic field; the other does not always coincide with the CO arm and its pitch angle differs from the orientation of its regular magnetic field. The offsets between ridges of regular magnetic field, dense gas and warm dust are compatible with the sequence expected from spiral density wave triggered star formation, with a delay of a few tens of millions of years between gas entering the shock and the formation of giant molecular clouds and a similar interval between the formation of the clouds and the emergence of young star clusters. At the position of the CO arms the orientation of the regular magnetic field is the same as the pitch angle of the spiral arm, but away from the gaseous arms the orientation of the regular field varies significantly. Spiral shock compression can explain the generation of one type of arm of strong polarized radio emission but a different mechanism is probably responsible for a second type of polarization arm.

Magnetism in the spiral galaxy NGC 6946: magnetic arms, depolarization rings, dynamo modes and helical fields

Context. The spiral galaxy NGC 6946 hosts magnetic spiral arms, highly aligned magnetic fields between the gas/optical arms. Aims. The origin of the magnetic phenomena and their relation to the interstellar gas are investigated. Methods. NGC 6946 was observed in total intensity and linear polarization in five radio bands between 3 cm and 21 cm. Maps of spectral index, Faraday rotation and depol...

Observations of Magnetic Fields - J.P. Vallée

The observational study of galactic magnetic fields dates back to 1949; an excellent review of the early 30 years has been made by Verschuur (1979). I review here the developments since then and the current state of our observational knowledge on the magnetic fields inside and outside the Milky Way galaxy, for objects with sizes greater than 1 parsec (= 3.2 light-years; = 3.1 × 1016 m). Include...

Measuring interstellar magnetic fields by radio synchrotron emission

Radio synchrotron emission, its polarization and its Faraday rotation are powerful tools to study the strength and structure of interstellar magnetic fields. The total intensity traces the strength and distribution of total magnetic fields. Total fields in gas-rich spiral arms and bars of nearby galaxies have strengths of 20–30 μGauss, due to the amplification of turbulent fields, and are dynam...

Galactic magnetic fields and spiral arms 3D dynamo simulations

We investigate the evolution of three-dimensional (3D), large-scale galactic magnetic fields under the influence of time dependent gas flows in spiral arms and excited by a turbulent dynamo. Our principal goal is to check how the enhanced turbulent diffusion in spiral arms affects the global magnetic field structure evolving under the influence of the dynamically changing gaseous spiral arms. S...

Magnetic Field Structure from Synchrotron Polarization

Total magnetic fields in spiral galaxies, as observed through their total synchrotron emission, are strongest (up to ≃ 30 μG) in the spiral arms. The degree of radio polarization is low; the field in the arms must be mostly turbulent or tangled. Polarized synchrotron emission shows that the resolved regular fields are generally strongest in the interarm regions (up to ≃ 15 μG), sometimes formin...
